Friends Pay Tribute to Slain Sneakerhead By Placing His Ashes in Custom Shoe Box
Family and friends laid the late Jamal "Mally" Gaines, co-owner of East Coast Sneaker Boutique in Rahway, N.J., to rest on Thursday. In a fashion fitting with his passion, Gaines' ashes were placed in a custom sneaker box.
Adam Gage (aka @soleyghost), another co-owner in the store, shared an image of the box on Instagram yesterday. The tribute resembles the box of recent retro Air Jordan 1s.
Gaines was shot dead at his store on Friday, Feb. 26. Police are still searching for a motive and a suspect.
In the week since his passing, Gaines' legacy has been celebrated both online and off. Social media has been filled with warm memories of the late Gaines and Saturday night's candle light vigil outside East Coast Boutique drew hundreds of community members paying their respects.
